ATPL or CPL: Which Pilot Licence Should You Choose?
If you dream of becoming an airline pilot in India, you’ve probably heard the terms CPL and ATPL. Many students get confused between the two, but the difference is actually simple.
A Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) is the licence you need to start your professional flying career. It allows you to earn money as a pilot and apply for airline jobs as a First Officer. To get a CPL in India, you must be at least 18, complete 10+2 with Physics and Mathematics, hold a DGCA Class 1 Medical and finish around 200 flying hours along with DGCA exams.
An Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL) is the highest level of pilot licence. It is required later in your career when you want to become an airline Captain. However, you do not need a full ATPL to join an airline as a fresher. Most pilots join airlines with a CPL and ATPL theory credits, then convert it into a full ATPL after gaining around 1,500 hours of flight experience.
So, it’s not really a choice between CPL or ATPL. The correct path is CPL first, then ATPL as you gain experience. Understanding this early can save you time, money and confusion.
At Aviation of Tomorrow, we guide students step by step, from choosing the right licence to planning DGCA exams and airline readiness. With the right guidance, your journey to the airline cockpit becomes much clearer.
